Studio Files: Ian Mowbray…

Uh oh – we’re about to hit Melbourne again and still haven’t posted our last visit to Ian’s studio. Best we do it now, we reckon, before we go…

Actually, it’s kinda timely – he’s in the throes of moving studio as we speak, so this is a bit of a sayonara for the old digs. We’re going over on Saturday arvo to check his work-in-progress for Tour de Force, and then he’s totally ‘roll ’em up, move ’em out, rawhide.’

We love that voyeuristic bizzo of checking out all the goodies lurking in the corners of artists’ studios…particularly the art that they buy for themselves,  and the stuff hanging around from (ongoing)collaborations.

We were down there to talk turkey about TdF, but what a great opportunity to trawl through his long term, seriously awesome (‘that word’ used advisedly, Nige) body of work…

The hour-power that goes into these hand-carved pieces is just mind-boggling.

Mowbray is one serious dude.

But wait, there’s more…

And then it was off to his exhibition at Dianne Tanzer Gallery in Fitzroy.

More of this incredible stuff (yep, another technical term) here.

Okay, sometimes we think it’s just a size thing – and from that point of view Ian Mowbray is definitely the smartest man in Australian glass. But from an artist’s point of view, he’s the poet in the pack. He’s the one who really gets it.

All that and more, here.
