Tour de Force heads south…

15 09 2012

Yep, it’s the latest chapter of…

…this time at…

…the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, where they show…

Anyhoo, it was great to be amongst our old mates again (it’s almost like groundhog day.) And this time, as a serious surprise, dear madly indomitable Richie turned up – fresh from cocktail hour at the Alfred – with a clutch of his devoted coterie for Megsie’s floor talk…

(The Gang’s been following the progress of his soap operatic treatment regime avidly, so seeing him in the flesh was just wild.)

Rodney and the crew at MPRG have done a great job with the install, and yet again it was fabulous to see the work accorded plenty of respectful space. [Yeah, you know what we're talkin' about, mutter, mutter, hrumph. n(Ed)]

Granny came along for the ride and had a lovely time mixing a bit of kultcha with a tour of her old haunts.

…and on the way back we swung by the McClelland. All too, too good…

…bar the very typical Melbourne weather.

We had a lovely quiet weekend to round it off. Highlights here.

We’re ba-ack…

15 09 2012

…from the latest episode of Tour de Force (more of that in the next post.)

We arrived home to news/snaps from Nige; confab in the Princess Day Spa (courtesy of Miss Pammy Faye)…

[Uh oh, that chin profile's getting way chunky, Megsie (the trip to Melbourne won't have helped.)  We're putting you on short rations, toot sweet. n(Ed)]

…and this little tid-bit from the NYTimes, on the subject of that well-known glassie, Picasso…

Who’d have thunk!! Check it out here

We predict a rash of copycatting.

This morning’s excitement…

30 08 2012

It’s tragic that Megsie gets so excited about such a tiny little jobbie, we know, but she’s been waiting a long time for this…

Again we went off to work and arrived back too late to see the finished article.

Fait accompli, slab wise. Can’t wait to get a gander in the morning.

Update on Megsie’s workshop…

29 08 2012

This morning, as Megsie left for work…

It was dark when we got home, so have to wait until tomorrow to check out the day’s progress…

Red letter day at the Hideout…

28 08 2012

Well, yesterday was a big day for the Gang.

Here’s a wee photojournal…

Phase One complete.

August catch-up…

12 08 2012

Goodness, we’re nearly at the half-way mark through August and we’ve not yet spread any of the love….better late than never, so here’s a bit of a job lot…

First up, Jas biz…

Mark Gerada

now showing

jas hugonnet gallery www.hugonnet.com.au

mediarelease

Mark Gerada is a multi-disciplinary practitioner who lives and works in the mountains west of Sydney. He is a painter, illustrator and teacher with a background in architecture, ceramics and design. He has exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, London, Brussels, China and Malta.

In this selection of works Gerada demonstrates his ability to combine abstraction and mixed media. Through the application and layering of media he creates space within the picture plane.

His dynamic brushwork evokes the act of painting where the subtle use texture creates depth.

To arrange an appointment to view or for media images, please call 0417 235 916 or contact the gallery via the website.

And then there was Nigel’s starring role at Heidi

[We love that work Nige - super, super cool. We can feel a re-emergence coming on.

n(Ed)]

And then there was the fabbo snap sent around work by one of the Rangers…

…which shot us straight down memory lane to Rose Montebello’s wonderful Knot…

And then there were last week’s highlights – like another circulated work pic of winter on the Brown…

And news of Alex’s upcoming show, opening this coming Thursday night (16th August) at Beaver…

Be still our beating heart  – we love Alex’s work. If Megsie manages to shrug off her current state (flu-blown) and make it across the Monaro for the Ranamok on Wednesday, the Gang may well manage to swing into the Beaver as well. Joy. (Just a reminder to our American friends that Beaver is the name of a gallery in Canberra…)

A restaurant proper at Wyndham…

23 04 2012

…who’d of thunk?

Just when we were despairing of there ever being anywhere to eat (except Uma’s at Pambula) Pete and Ainslie at the Wyndham General Store have opened a restaurant – complete with bone fide chef!!  Saturday was our first opportunity to give it a run and we were exclaiming so much over everything that we didn’t remember to take a snap until the pudd came…

All rather sweet, not over fancy (as in pretentious) and you can’t go wrong (from Megsie’s point of view) when you’re talking local oysters and duck. Yummy.

Looks like a return visit, toot sweet, to try those sticky lamb shanks…

Two birds in the hand…

23 04 2012

The Gang dropped by Peter Dunne’s studio on Saturday to check out Megsie’s portrait – all done bar the tweaking. Kinda cute…especially the parrot!

Wedding of the Year…

2 04 2012

Well there was nothing more momentous than this happening in 2012, that’s for sure – Shay and Les tied the proverbial knot.

How adorable it was, and how priviledged we were to be included.

We love youse guys.

Snaps of the ceremonials, the gorgeous reception on the terrace of the National Library and the ultimate recovery/Dicko Pool partay here. Too damned good.

The National Student Art Glass Prize…

1 04 2012

Don’t fret if you missed the opening (the Gang did tooit clashed with the Tweed River opening of TdF), this show runs until 16th June so there’s plenty of time to mosey across.

Meanwhile Michael’s been kind enough to send all the g(l)oss, from the announcement of the winner…

…to lots of lovely snaps…

…and the catalogue essay…

Encouraging the next generation

The National Student Art Glass Prize 2012 (NSAGP) rewards creativity, innovation and quality. It’s not the artist’s reputation or name being judged but the artistic merit technique and innovation behind their art practice. The NSAGP is an acquisitive prize and is open to all artists studying art glass at an Australian University. The quality of work coming out of these institutions meant the inaugural biennial NSAGP (2010) had 40 artists from around Australia short-listed and was then reduced to 24 finalists with Belinda Toll from Australian National University in Canberra, taking out the top award. This year 45 artists have been short-listed and from this 30 finalists have been chosen.

The NSAGP exhibition is an eagerly anticipated opportunity to view a cross section of art glass being produced in this country and is a major highlight on the Australian art glass calendar. The passion and commitment shown by the lecturers, tutors and academics from Sydney College of the Arts at University of Sydney, Monash University in Victoria, South Australian School of Art at University of South Australia, The School of Art at the Australian National University in Canberra, Edith Cowan University in  Western Australian is overwhelming and inspiring.

As with the inaugural 2010 NSAGP,  the winner of the 2012 prize will not only have their work acquired into the National Art Glass Collection but will receive two Masterclasses at the renowned North Lands Creative Glass Centre on the north east coast of Scotland as part of North Lands International Masterclasses and Conference Program.

The Australian studio glass community is highly professional; this is due in large part to the institutions and the training artists receive. It is because of this professional attitude and the vast variety of techniques that national and international collectors have a passion for Australian contemporary art glass.

Australian institutions are having on the next generation of art glass practitioners and offers a glimpse into the future of this magnificent art form.

The national and international recognition of the NSAGP continues to expand and to fulfil one of its core task’s; to help develop and promote the profile of new artists. Once again the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is delighted by the quality of work on display and is proud to be fostering the next generation of Australian contemporary art glass makers.

Our own faves were Emma Borland…

Spike Deane (which we’ve shown before)…

and Marcaela Faithfull…

Especially the last; so sweet we could eat it.

All refreshingly fun (ie not taking themselves so bloody seriously – which is an artform in itself, we reckon.)

Flick through the snaps here.
