Hey honeys, we’re home!!

6 01 2011

Hey ya’ll, we’ve finally made it home (delayed by ‘technical problems’ with Qantas), dragging ourselves weary across the threshold at some godforsaken hour, to be welcomed by Graham and Deb and a big carnivorous fang-fest washed down with buckets of decent Aussie wine. [The Europeans are kidding themselves, we've decided. Their wine's much too thin for our palate; we're so into a more robust drop...though we did enjoy the Sancerre and Taittinger, it's true... n(Ed)]

Anyhoo, we managed a few hours sleep before dragging ourselves up for brekky to wave Graham and the troops off to Sydney for their impending flight home; they’ve just done the xmas dash from England, so it’s a minor miracle we managed to catch up at all.

Graham whipped up an ostrich omelette…

What a treat.  So lovely to see them – though nowhere near long enough, of course.

Meanwhile it’s going to take forever to sift through the happy snaps. What a gorgoeus  place Myanmar is. Delightful.

We’ll leave you with a coupla tasters:

We have to ‘fess up to being a tad pagoda’d out…

But it was incredibly beautiful.

Megsie got some laps in (pool to herself, always best)…

…and even the Poo had a bit of a run…

More news soon.

Postcard from Venice…

26 10 2010

Dira has just returned from her fabulous Big 5-oh! tour of Europe (almost in concert with Granny’s – those Libran women know how to party, eh?) And yes, the Gang was supposed to be there, swinging from one birthday dinner to the other. Serious bummer dudes, what can we tell ya; the walk-in Marcus G ‘drobe and Burma quickly put paid to all that. Ah, well, such is life.

Anyhoo, after Paris/Canal de Midi barge biz/and Spain, Dira and Toni headed for Venice for the real birthday treat; a mosaic workshop at Orsini. Dira loves her smalti, and she wasn’t disappointed. Between the daily walk to the Orsini workshop…

…the buckets of smalti…

…the Master’s work…

…and a slap-up buon compleanno dinner with reliable pals…

…and, most importantly, Toni…

…what more could a girl possibly want?

Oh yeah, maybe just a gorgey chandelier from Murano – as a little souvenir of the occasion…

Dira and Toni ran a blog for the duration of the trip. You can work your way back through it, here.

Postcard from Florida…

…from the Gang’s little bro (who’s shooting a movie down there.)  Gorgeous!!

Wish we was there…

Postcard from Myanmar: Sammy on bridge…

9 08 2010

Just in from Sammy Jo, who’s recently signed on as hotel manager of The Road to Mandalay (serious Orient Express gorgeousness in old-skool-Burma)…

Looks like we’d all better hack a track to Myanmar. (The Gang’s planning to slip across at Xmas.)

Reflect on that…

4 08 2010

Here’s a nice little connect, via Nigel, to the ANU Postgrad blog Transit Lane. Must admit, we do rather like the reflection.

Postcard from Seattle…

3 08 2010

Our all-time fave Seattle-based expat, James Minson, has finally surfaced to let us know that he’s still alive – just caught in the depths of his dissertation (and fielding commissions on the side!)

Check out this bit of serious gorgeousness, commissioned by peeps who’d bought a condo with a built in fish-tank but wanted to avoid the hassle of live-fishy upkeep.

Now that’s lavish. [Sigh! - we want to win the lotto now and order one. n(Ed)]

Postcard for Sammy…

15 06 2010

Just in from Nigel

…linked in from artdaily, with a crossover to this

Yoiks!!

Darlings – far superior art handling practice at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery, we can assure you.

(…tick the white gloves and steelcap boot boxes, but we must admit we don’t do the two blokes looking lovingly into each other’s eyes. The Annie Proulx thang has yet to come to Bega.)

Postcard from London…

12 06 2010

About three weeks ago we got a postcard from Timmy Horn in London sending us snaps of the latest occupant of the fourth plinth, Yinka Shonibare’s work  Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle.

And he sent a link to the Guardian’s fantastic set of snaps, including…

Just fabulous…and then we got busy and it was lost under a pile of posts-in-waiting. Until today when we checked out Nige’s latest update on his grand Rug Tour of Europe with Tim Bonyhady.

We got ‘specially excited ‘cos Megsie’s got a thing for the Victory – way back in the dim recesses of time she scuttled all over it on a visit to Portsmouth when she was four. Her old man was on a two year exchange with the RN and a family friend was the serving Captain of  HMS Victory at the time (even though it was in dry dock, it used to – and may well still - maintain a ridgy didge Royal Navy captain and crew.) So it was access all areas. Bloody marvellous.

Thanks to both Timmy and Nige - super!!

Postcard from London…

22 05 2010

Jane Bruce sends word that she had the ‘lovely fortune of unexpectedly catching up with Tevita’ at the Saatchi Gallery last week…

…where she snapped him in situ at Collect. Love that piece – hope it’s schnapped up by a serious collection/gallery.
