Postcard from New Mexico…

The Gang just recieved a postcard from the adorably spunky Timothy Horn, who’s (gasp!) laid aside the rubber for a moment [see earlier 'postcard from New Mexico' post] to paddle in the glass pond again.

(We should fess up at this juncture that the original line-up for Megsie’s Hunks of Glass exhibition at the Ausglass Conference in Canberra next January was to have been a cast of five. The show, the curator’s pick of the spunkiest blokes in glass, had included Tim and James Minson on the wish list - both of whom now practice and live over in the States. Logistics, alas, defeated us (and the fact that Tim wasn’t making anything in glass at the time!!) But never mind - they’ll be here in spirit. Meanwhile the remaining trio of spunks – Brenden Scott French, Tevita Havea and Masahiro Asaka – will more than hold their end up. No pun intended…)

Anyhoo, Tim is currently part of a fabulous show at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Andy and Oz: Parallell Visions, a cross-generational exploration showcasing the work of Martin Sharp, Richard Larter and Robert Rooney (representing the 1960’s and 1970’s), Tracy Moffat and Juan Davila (the 1980’s), Fiona Hall (1990’s) and Timothy Horn (2000 to the present.) ** What a line-up! The exhibition, a curatorial collaboration between the NGA’s Dr Deborah Hart and the Andy Warhol Museum Director Thomas Sokolowski, was presented in conjunction with the National Gallery of Australia’s 25th anniversary celebration. (It’s on until December 30th, so anybody finding themselves in the vicinity of downtown Pittsburgh really oughta amble in.)

Aussie culture was apparently getting a good’n'proper run – Pittsburgh was concurrently hosting an Aussie Arts Fest, featuring such stellar acts as Circus Oz and Chunky Move - which Tim tells us was a real blast to be part of; he got to hang out with more Australians during the several days he was in town than he’s likely to encounter in a lifetime over there, he reckoned.

But now he’s back in New Mexico, in the studio making work for a show at the De Young Museum in San Francisco next May (a chandelier based on an 18th century rock crystal model, out of rock suger, and a large carriage…sounds positively scrumptious) He’s actually been blowing a bit of glass again – “good fun too, after an absence of many moons”  – and has just finished off a piece for the art fair in Miami next month…

[No rest for the wicked, old darling. It's always lovely to hear from you - lots of love from all your mates on this side of the puddle...  n(Ed)]

** postscript: we had garnered the general info about the Andy and Oz exhibition from the Warhol museum’s website, but Tim’s just been back in touch to alert us to the fact that two artists are mysteriously missing-in-action from the published list… Christian Thompson (who also features in the current NGA Culture Warriors show) and Liu Xiao Xian.
